The Art of Building is a series of Continuing Education courses focused on topics related to materials, building craft, and traditional trades. The purpose of the series is to provide architects, designers, craftspersons, and all those interested in the art of building with knowledge that will help them exercise better judgement in design and specification. In addition, the courses in the series will highlight ways to effectively integrate craft and to build more durably, economically, authentically, and sustainably. The program underscores the pivotal link between artisanship and traditional design.
The products of the stonecarving tradition are cherished by all, yet the tools and techniques that have been used to produce them are shrouded in mystery.
Join master carver at the as he leads this unique workshop, revealing to you the secrets of traditional stone carving. Each participant will have their own block of limestone, and with only a few simple chisels will be given the opportunity to experience the joy of transforming it into a sculpture. You may not go home with a masterpiece, but you will never look at a stone carving the same way again, and you just might discover why humans have been obsessed with shaping stone for thousands of years.Please note that space in this program is limited. All tools and materials for the course will be provided.
Master Carver Chris Pellettieri was trained over 30 years ago at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in an apprenticeship program focused on the ancient traditional methods of stone carving. Since 1997, he has run a successful stone carving business, doing commissioned work for individuals and institutions in the New York area. He founded Pellettieri Stone Carvers’ Academy in 2015 to preserve the tradition by teaching, lecturing and demonstrating.
The 91²Ö¿â provides up to three complimentary spaces in each Continuing Education course for students or young professionals to attend. Upon signing up, you will be entered into a pool of applicants. Individuals will be randomly selected two weeks before the course begins, and all sign-ups will be notified via email. The 91²Ö¿â National Office does not offer recurring continuing education classes on a regular basis, but aims to offer future sessions of classes whose demand exceeded capacity. Core classes are generally offered annually or semi-annually. The frequency of 91²Ö¿â Chapter courses varies by region.

Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) in architecture includes topics that relate to the structural integrity and soundness of a building or a building site.
